Episode 337: EppyFest 9 Preview

This is the 337th edition of the Epileptic Gibbon podcast music show and the playlist to accompany it. You can CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD but note the shows are large files. The show is also available to stream via Mixcloud and the Progzilla Radio Network (the show appears on Progzilla in alternate weeks). The main focus for this show is to preview my own upcoming live music event EppyFest 9, happening in Cheltenham over the weekend of Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July at Smokey Joe’s. You’ll hear tracks from all six of the acts playing at EppyFest this year, including a feature album, ‘13 Moons’, the 2021 album by Hands of the Heron who will be headlining the Sunday of EppyFest 9, so you’ll hear three tracks from that. You’ll also be hearing some spoken word contributions from each of the EppyFest acts, so you’ll get some insights into what you can expect from them and what they’re looking forward to about the festival, and we’ll cover the usual diverse selection of styles and genres across the playlist, including some tributes to people we have sadly lost recently. Below you’ll find the track list, plus weblinks from where you can find more information about each artist.

Episode 303: Best of 2020, Top 42 pt 1

This is the 303rd edition of the Epileptic Gibbon podcast music show and the playlist to accompany it. You can CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD but note the shows are large files. The show is also available to stream via Mixcloud and the Progzilla Radio Network (the show appears on Progzilla in alternate weeks). Many thanks to Rebsie Fairholm for standing in for me on the last show when I was very busy with work – it was indeed a most excellent playlist. But I’m back again with this show as I begin my slightly delayed countdown of my favourite albums of 2020. It feels to me that, in an otherwise terrible year, there were so many great albums released in 2020, which meant I found it even harder than normal to get it down to a top 30, so in the end I didn’t bother, and instead I went for a top 42. For this show it’s part 1 (of 4) of my 42 favourite albums of 2020. You can expect a great mixture of music in this show, and a typically eclectic playlist, with two tracks each from the albums I’ve placed between 42 and 31 in the countdown (with the top 30 countdown continuing over the course of the next three shows). Below you’ll find the track list, plus weblinks from where you can find more information about each artist.

Episode 300: The Gift of the Wheelman

This is the 300th edition (sorta) of the Epileptic Gibbon podcast music show and the playlist to accompany it. You can CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD but note the shows are large files. The show is also available to stream via Mixcloud and the Progzilla Radio Network (the show appears on Progzilla in alternate weeks). I hope you enjoyed the previous very special and bittersweet show. This time, however, it’s this year’s festive edition, so you can expect the usual eclectic mixture of music only this time all the tracks will have some form of wintry/Christmas/solstice theme. We have a feature album this time around, ‘The Essential Now That’s What I Call an a.P.A.t.T. Christmas Vol 1’, the 2019 compilation album by a.P.A.t.T., which contains 12 songs released over 13 years as part of the band’s annual challenge to record and release a song for each day of Christmas, and you’ll hear three tracks from that across the course of the show. You can also expect the usual eclectic musical mix, including some new music from 2020, some older tracks of various vintages thrown in for good measure, and a tribute to the late, great Harold Budd. All-in-all, expect a unique festive-themed extravaganza with lots of great music and pleasant surprises. Episode 299: 300 and Mum

This is the 299th edition (though it’s actually the 300th) of the Epileptic Gibbon podcast music show and the playlist to accompany it. You can CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD but note the shows are large files. The show is also available to stream via Mixcloud and the Progzilla Radio Network (the show appears on Progzilla in alternate weeks). Many thanks to Rebsie Fairholm for kindly standing in for me on the excellent previous show. This time around it’s a very special show for a couple of reasons. First, because it’s actually the 300th edition (because sometime ago I did a ‘half’ show, & if you count that then this becomes show number 300), so that seems like a thing well worth celebrating. Second, on a much more tragic note, my Mum sadly passed away back in September, so I wanted to pay musical tribute to her in much the same way that I did for my Dad back in 2019. And as with my Dad, there wasn’t a huge overlap between my Mum’s tastes and those of a typical Eppy Gibbon playlist, so what I’ve done is pick some tracks that she loved, and I’ve scattered them throughout this show’s eclectic playlist. So, some of the tracks won’t be quite what you’re used to but there should be enough typical Eppy Gibbon music to keep everyone satisfied. There’s no feature album this time, to allow me to play the tracks dedicated to my Mum, but there’s the usual mixture of great & eclectic sounds from bands/acts you’ll know plus quite a few that you won’t. Below you’ll find the track list, plus weblinks from where you can find more information about each artist.

Episode 292: The See-Through Man

This is the 292nd edition of the Epileptic Gibbon podcast music show and the playlist to accompany it. You can CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD but note that the shows are large files. The show is also available to stream via Mixcloud and the Progzilla Radio Network (the show appears on Progzilla in alternate weeks). I hope you enjoyed the previous show where we particularly focused on the art rock band Girl Swallows Nightingale, including an interview with their lead singer-songwriter, plus three tracks from their excellent debut album ‘Shapeshifter’. We have another feature album this time around, but we go back 20 years to the year 2000 and the debut album by Goldfrapp, ‘Felt Mountain’, and you’ll hear a couple of tracks from that on this playlist. Other than that you can expect the usual eclectic musical mixture, including loads of tracks from 2020, plus a few things of a slightly older vintage. Below you’ll find the track list, plus weblinks from where you can find more information about each artist.

Episode 290: Ennio Morricone, Tim Smith and Affectionate Friends

This is the 290th edition of the Epileptic Gibbon podcast music show and the playlist to accompany it. You can CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD but note that the shows are large files. The show is also available to stream via Mixcloud and the Progzilla Radio Network (the show appears on Progzilla in alternate weeks). This is a sad but celebratory show, as we pay tribute to a number of composers and musicians that we have sadly lost recently. We have a feature artist, the late, great maestro himself, Ennio Morricone, and we’ll be playing several tracks either composed or inspired by him. We also recently lost the genius English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and music video director Tim Smith, best known as the frontman of the band Cardiacs. I will be doing a longer tribute to him on a future show, but I couldn’t let this show pass by without celebrating Tim’s great talents, so you’ll hear music from him and also composed by him, as well as music from many of his affectionate friends scattered throughout the show. And we have also recently lost the singer-songwriter, guitarist and Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green, and Jarno Sarkula, leader of the Finnish band Alamaailman Vasarat, so you’ll also hear tributes to them. And around all those tributes you can expect the usual eclectic musical mixture. Below you’ll find the track list, plus weblinks from where you can find more information about each artist.
